Reminder To Rob Portman: You Created This Mess In The First Place

Yesterday in Akron, Portman Talked About Getting Out of This Economic "Mess" -- NEWSFLASH: It Was Rob Portman Who Created This Mess

Portman: I Stand By My Record

Today, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee would like to remind Rob Portman that it was his role as the "architect of the Bush economy" that got Ohio into the economic mess in the first place. Portman was quoted in the Akron Beacon Journal as saying he "stands by his record" but would like to look towards the future and "how we can get out of this mess." Portman, who voted against the interests of middle-class Ohioans for years in Congress, then served as U.S. Trade Representative and Director of the Office of Management and Budget in George W. Bush’s Administration, was the one responsible for making the policy decisions that resulted in the economic mess that Ohio is currently in. As much as Rob Portman would like to gloss over and forget about his record of driving the economy into the ditch, the people of Ohio suffering under his misguided policies won’t forget come election day next year.

"Rob Portman is trying to pull a fast one on the people of Ohio," said Eric Schultz, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Communications Director. "The economy is in a mess today due to the misguided policies put into place by Rob Portman. Rob Portman wants the people of Ohio to forget about his record and his own economic policies that drove the Ohio economy into a ditch. Anyone who thinks Rob Portman is the one who can get the economy moving again may also want to look at hiring the captain of the Titanic to head the Coast Guard."

Ohioans can thank Portman for thousands of lost jobs, tax credits for corporations who move their jobs overseas, and a huge trade imbalance. During Portman’s service in the Bush Administration, Portman supported trade deals that shipped Ohio jobs overseas and drove our country deep into debt. As a Congressman, Portman voted to give tax cuts to the super rich, and repeatedly voted against raising the minimum wage. Rob Portman was also a staunch backer of granting permanent most favored nation status to China, a move that organized labor in Ohio strongly opposed. While he served as U.S. Trade Representative, Portman oversaw the loss of millions of jobs to China and a soaring trade deficit. Now, as he runs for Senate, Portman is advocating for the same failed economic policies that got Ohio into an economic mess in the first place. Far from being a friend to the Ohio middle-class, Rob Portman has a record of ignoring their interests.
