Pat Toomey So Far To The Right, Would Lose To Even A Fake Candidate

Far-right Toomey Can’t Run From His Extremist Record

Today, with fake candidate Republican Congressman Sanders announcing a bid for the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, it’s clear that Pat Toomey is too far to the right to win in Pennsylvania and would resoundingly lose to Congressman Sanders if he were a real candidate. Pat Toomey spent three terms in Congress, during which he racked up a rating from the American Conservative Union to the right of even defeated former Senator Rick Santorum, who lost by eighteen percentage points in 2006. Toomey is so far to the right that prominent Republicans, including NRSC Vice-Chairman Orrin Hatch, have said that he is unelectable in Pennsylvania. Finally, Toomey told MSNBC just a few months ago that he would support throwing doctors who perform abortions in jail, an idea far outside the Pennsylvania mainstream.

"After looking all over the state of Pennsylvania for a credible alternative, Republicans appear stuck with Pat Toomey and his far-right voting record," said Democratic Senatorial Campaign Communications Director Eric Schultz. "Pennsylvania voters overwhelmingly rejected Rick Santorum in 2006, and with Toomey running to the right of even Santorum, he appears headed to the same defeat. When prominent members of your own party have thrown in the towel and are on record saying you can’t win, you know your candidacy is in trouble. Pat Toomey is so far to the right that it’s not unthinkable for an imaginary candidate to beat him."

NRSC Vice-Chairman Orrin Hatch: "I don't think there is anybody in the world who believes he can get elected senator there."

Toomey Said He Would Outlaw Abortion, Penalize Doctors that Perform Abortions. During an interview on MSNBC in August 2009, Toomey told host Chris Matthews that he believes that "states should be free to restrict abortion," and that he would support "legislation in Pennsylvania that would ban abortion." When asked whether or not he would throw doctors who perform abortions in jail, Toomey said, "At some point, doctors performing abortions, I think, would - would be subject to that sort of penalty." The American Conservative Union gave Toomey a lifetime rating of 97 (out of 100), while Santorum only has a lifetime rating of 88.1.
